Type Locality and Naming

Eastern Fujian. The Zaixia Formation was erected by Li Jianhai (1994) in the Zaixia Village about 15 km south of the Yongtai County of Fujian. The type section is along the simple highway between Zaixia – Bingwanwei (118º58', 25º43') south of the Yongtai County of Fujian.

Lithology and Thickness

The Zaixia Formation is represented by a set of purple red sedimentary-volcanic eruptive rock series, which is roughly divided into two members. Lower member is built up by purple red tuffaceous sandy conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone, occasionally with dacite, which lies disconformably on the underlying Huangkeng Formation. Upper member is built up by purple gray and gray green rhyolite, rhyolitic tuff lava, potash feldspar rhyolite, quartz trachyte, occasionally with tuffaceous siltstone and occasionally with basalt seen at the base. The Zaixia Formation is 1072.4 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It contacts disconformably on the underlying Huangkeng Fm.

Upper contact

It is overlain disconformably by tuffaceous sandstone of the Shiniushan Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in east Fujian and is completely developed in Yunshan of Yongtai-Wuhushan of Fuzhou, Lingtongshan of Pinghe, Zhenghe-Luoyuan. It is basically the same in lithology in the various basins and ranges from 440.9 to 1367.7 m in thickness.

Fossils

Its lower member yields floras Manica parceramosa, Brachyphyllum obesum, Cupressimocladus gracilis, Pagiophyllum sp.; estherias Yanjiestheria sp., Orthestheria sp.


Age 

To the south of the Zhaixia Village of Yongtai County, the bulk rock for potash-feldspar rhyolite collected from the upper member of the formation has shown K-Ar age of 106.8 Ma.
